Chilli Seeds for a new Season

Even in the colder parts of the United Kingdom it is possible to grow your own chilli peppers from seed, January to February is the perfect time for planting. Although your chilli seeds can be planted any time until May, getting an early start will give your plants more time be ripe for the summer.

New kind of product at The Devil’s Garden!

Yes, of course what we meant when naming our online business “The Devil’s Garden” was to indicate the spicy nature as well as the wide range of our products. But as we go along we find ourselves wanting to branch out and provide other elements that, just as with chillies, are there to enhance the flavour of your food.

This is why we decided at The Devil’s Garden to launch a section of “Herb Seeds” (in the Grow Your Own category). We have been providing chilli seeds to quite a few customers for the past months (NuMex Big Jim, Scotch Bonnets and Satan’s Kiss chilli seeds being the bestsellers so far) and were asked several times to look into selling herb seeds as garden or cooking herbs are widely used in many form of cuisine from European to American and of course Eastern.

Our first impulse was to get several types of basil herb seeds as this is a garden herb that is found in many a recipe and goes incredibly well as we all know with Italian food. We also got some Oregano, Common Thyme and Sage herb seeds as these are staples of beloved roasts and stews. Dill, Peppermint and Tarragon work wonderfully well in salads and with fish, as well as parsley. We of course got some coriander herb seeds as this is a very popular herb that is of course at its best in curries. We also decided to stock some Chamomile herb seeds as not only is the plant really ornamental with daisy-like flowers but the medicinal virtues and soothing sensation of chamomile are notorious, really relevant when you have been over-doing it with chillies!

The Devil Grows Chillies

We are not going to pretend we are the best at producing chillies here at the Devil’s Garden compared to experienced growers such as Woody from Firefoods and his Infinity Chilli or Ged from The Chilli Pepper Company and his now notorious Naga Viper Chilli (his super hot natural hot sauce Naga Viper is now back in stock, get your hands on it quick!).

We are still keen to show people how easy it can be to grow chillies though and have therefore set up a new blog called “The Devil Grows Chillies” where you will be able to see our crop of chillies for 2011 progressing from start to finish.

We have already started our chilli seeds, some of which are also available at The Devil’s Garden in our “Grow your own” section. We have also started tomatoes as we usually get very good results every year, especially when using hydroponics.

We hope to provide as many pictures, updates and information as possible over the coming months and hope to do this every year, changing or improving our methods each time. As always, we are here to provide you with advice if you need it so don’t hesitate and email us.

Greenhouse Sensations SolarGrow

We mentioned earlier that the Devil’s Garden now provides a wide range of chilli seeds, either popular or rare ones but when it comes to planting, people have various ways of producing good crops.

We had been using the traditional method for years when we came across Greenhouse Sensations who provide quality hydroponics that are suitable for the avid grower as much as the amateur living in the city with only a window box as a space for planting.

The SolarGrow is by far the most efficient way of growing chillies and other vegetables, especially tomatoes. Our first year brought us a crop of more than 250 cherry tomatoes from just one plant! The chillies this year have done very well and we have been able to fit 4 types of chilli plants in one SolarGrow. But what I hear you say is SolarGrow exactly?

Grow Your Own!

January is usually the best time to start preparing your crops. We have now dedicated a whole section of our website to growing equipment and chilli seeds labelled “Grow your own”.

We are always keen to compare how chilli pepper plants perform in a natural environment or in “scientific” equipment such as lights and hydroponics. Hydroponics have definitely been a big help for us in the past couple of years and we see a definite improvement in growth and number of chillies on the plant every time although we still love the traditional manner with soil and natural light.

We love to use Greenhouse Sensations’ Window Grow as it is very easy to use and is fantastic, not only for chilli plants but also for kitchen herbs. We used our Quad Grow for chilli plants and tomatoes this summer and the plants soon found themselves very confined despite our sizeable greenhouse!

We have many chilli seeds to go on the website yet but for now four types are available which are not your average chilli pepper. We are keen to grow all sorts of chillies, either mild or insane so we will surely develop this in the coming months.
